DSC07825_12~0.jpg

November 2007. Day after Thanksgiving. In town the temps were in the upper 40's. However, up on Frozen GFMT it was 18 degrees on the swinging bridge, and 21 degrees in the parking lot. The entire mountain top was an ice cap.

More Pics on the way

This was a quick spur of the moment trip. Sun set was upon us as we hiked to the summit. As we reached the top we noticed that a weather system was also approaching. We ended up running down the mountain to flee the storm. But in the end we were able to get some awesome photos. Then headed over to Gatlinburg...

This was a 2 day trip totaling over 600 miles. It began in Marion, NC heading up US80 (nice nice road!) to the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 344. We made a couple stops along the way. One stop was at Craggy Gardens mile marker 364. We hiked to the top of Craggy Dome, talk about panoramic!

We then continued on south to Cherokee, NC to the southern end of the Parkway at about mile marker 467. From there we headed north on 441 through the Smokey Mountain National Park. We (railed up the 7 mile road to) stopped at Clingmans Dome.

Then continued on to the over look of Gatlinburg, TN. Then got back into the groove on 67 (little river road) toward Townsend. From there we headed to the Foothills Parkway, stopped for a couple photos.

And now it was now time to Slap the Gap. After a recent sting on US129 we were quite cautious but after a few turns everything looked CLEAN so were able to get our lean on!

To make a long story short, I killed my tires and had new ones mounted at Wheeler's. After that we grabbed a Hotel in Robbinsville, ate some grub and called it a night.

The next morning we did the Dragonagain, headed back up the Foothills PKWY to check out Look Rock Tower. Then back down to smack the Dragon a couple more times. And not to mention 28, we railed it a few times too. I'd have to say we had one of the best trips/rides EVER!!

The date was September 30th, heading out at 7:00 am. It was 49 degrees and dropping as I ascended upward on the trip. In some areas the temps were as low as 35 degrees. By mid morning the temps were already in the 60's, ah what a ride!!! Take a look at some of the pictures, they were taken on highway 181, Blueridge Parkway, and the road up to Grandfather Mountain.

Tanawha Trail

DSC08983_13.jpg

Date January 27th 2008 Temperature was 22 degrees with wind gusting over 60 mph. The Blue Ridge Parkway was still closed from Blowing rock, NC to Asheville,NC due to a couple snow storms the previous week.

This hike began at Beacon Heights to Rough Ridge total distance one way is 4.1 miles. This section of the Tanawha runs along the Blue Ridge Parkway below Grand father Mountain. It also takes you under the the Linn Cove Viaduct and two other sections of the Parkway (Stack Rock & Wilson Creek bridges) At the end of the tail you get a panoramic view of the entire stretch you just hiked across. It is at this point you realize you have to walk all the way back ;-(

February 3rd 2008 temperature 36 degrees at the start of the trail head and getting colder as we ascend. This trail starts at the trails parking lot on Grandfather Mountain. You take 2 trails to get to MacRae Peak. .6 miles on the Grandfather ext trail, and another .6 on the Grandfather trail. A total of 1.2 miles. This trail utilities cables and ladders to climb and access steep, sheer rock faces.

I meet the Ranger as he walked back from testing and CLOSING the trail for the day. He closed it due to the ice storm that came through three days before. He claimed that now there is ice on top of last weeks snow storm. He stated that this pretty makes thing impassable. He was reluctant to let me go, After many questions he said to take it slow... One of the questions was ask if I had ice cleats, I said no. But I will next week ;-)

It was a real slow and tortuous go, it took 6 hrs to hike 2.6 miles. I had to chip off ice from rock faces while clinging to cables, slide down ice trails, jump over ravines. It was pretty exciting to say the least. Photos on the way...

OH, and they said that a bear was spotted in the area on January 12th ???

Attic Window Peak

Resize_of_DSC09762.JPG

Date 3/2/2008 39 degrees

This hike was an attempt to Calloway Peak. 5 mile round trip hike at an elevation of 5,964'
But with the higher elevations still covered in ice and 3 feet of snow we didn't have enough time in the day to achieve it once again. We were barely able to cover 3 miles in 7 hours time. We even had ice cleats this time out, but still no luck getting to Calloway Peak. All we could do is stare at the peak and get a photo of the Calloway Peak in the distance.

Calloway Peak - via Grandfather trail

DSC09858.JPG

We finally make it! No ice, no snow, no rain, just perfect weather. However, we were in the clouds most of the trip! This hike to Calloway Peak and the Watuaga Overlook is a 5.2 mile round trip a total elevation of 5,964'

October 2008 Table Rock Summit Hike. This hike runs along the Linville Gorge, AKA The North Carolina Grand Canyon. The views from the trail ridge are spectacular, especially with the fall colors! With an elevation of 3,920 ft, it gives you a very panoramic view of the 6,600 elevations surrounding it.
